Financing and reimbursement for your medical cannabis

Medical cannabis prescribed under the ACMPR/RACFM may, depending on your situation, be covered in full or in part by private insurance, CNESST, IVAC or the Veterans Affairs program. Here's how to find out what applies to you.

Last updated:

Private and group insurance

Many group (employer) or private insurance plans offer partial coverage for medical cannabis, generally under the specialty drug category. Terms vary by insurer: some require proof that conventional treatments failed, others a form signed by the prescribing physician.

Wemedic provides the medical documentation you need to support your request to your insurer.

CNESST — workplace accident or illness

If your condition (chronic pain, work-related PTSD, etc.) stems from an occupational injury recognized by CNESST, medical cannabis can be included in your treatment plan and reimbursed once a physician formally authorizes it.

Our team can work alongside your existing CNESST file to support your claim.

IVAC — crime victims

People compensated by IVAC for physical or psychological after-effects of a crime may, in some cases, have their medical cannabis reimbursed as part of their rehabilitation plan, on a physician's recommendation.

Veterans Affairs Canada & Medavie Blue Cross

Canadian Armed Forces veterans covered by Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) and administered by Medavie Blue Cross may be eligible for medical cannabis reimbursement — and get a 100% free teleconsultation at Wemedic for the entire process.
